It is recommended that everyone has their home tested for radon, as testing is the only way of knowing if a location has elevated levels of radon. It can take years of exposure before any symptoms are observed, and by then the damage from radon exposure has been done. Radon is measured in picocuries per liter, or pCi/l and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends taking action to mitigate radon at levels of 4 pCi/l or above. To put this in context, a home with radon levels of 4 pCi/l is exposed to around 35 times more radiation than the Nuclear Regulatory Commission allows at the fence line of a radioactive waste site.
Testing for radon can be done in multiple ways depending on the use of the structure, the size of it (square footage, single family vs multi-family), and the circumstances leading up to the testing (real estate transaction, HUD project, etc.). Based on these variables one method may be better suited than another. For single family radon tests we utilize state-of-the-art technology that takes radon measurements every hour over the course of at least 48 hours and immediately provides us results as to the average radon levels within the tested area during the tested period. Upon completion of testing a copy of the radon results are emailed to the client where it displays the radon levels on a chart to visually see how the radon levels fluctuated throughout the test.
The testing unit itself is placed by one of our licensed technicians in the lowest habitable area of the residence. It is placed on a tripod and does not need to be touched until the unit is picked-up. If radon levels come back at or above 4.0 pCi/L then a radon mitigation system is recommended to be installed.
